HEALING OUR ENVIRONMENT
Our environment has been subject to many attacks.
These
attacks grew from seeds
of
ignorance, indifference and greed
over many generations.
Our
healing must extend to include
as
many of these problems and issues
as we can identify -
now well-rooted in various agricultural, consumer and
governmental policies.
Our
urban environment is much more lethal than
the terrorists.
Many people die in accidents.
Over 100,000 die annually in the US from fatal reactions
to medications that were properly prescribed.
Millions die of hunger and disease every day.
We too often take our environmental and global problems
for granted - seeing them as "the way things are."
9-11 wakes us up to ask,
"Why are these environmental and human distasters happening?"
"Why are we reacting with such indifference?"
Is it OK for major disasters to happen
if they come one person or one acre
or one poison or one species at a time?
Our indifference to these problems
plants seeds that grow into violence,
with the potential for more 9-11s.
